For thousands of Canadians, prison represents more than just the loss of personal freedom. No matter how hardened the offender, prison raises soul-searching questions.

The Canadian Bible Society (CBS) works with chaplains across Canada to bring hope through the Word of God to the 34,000 men and women incarcerated in Canada's prisons - in 46 prisons for men and six for women.

Prison chaplains offer prisoners copies of the Society's Gospel of John entitled The Key. The offenders are encouraged to read the Gospel and then answer a number of questions on a postcard at the back of the book. They can then give the postcards to a chaplain to request a full Bible from the CBS in either French or English.

The Canadian Bible Society also distributes the Walking with Jesus new reader series, in a variety of languages, to prisoners requiring literacy materials.

The New Testaments and Bibles given to prisoners are sometimes the only personal possessions of serious offenders who are segregated from the general prison population. In times of deep despair, God's Word can become the sole source of light in a very dark world.
