Bible Translator Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at 2009 Aboriginal Achievement Awards

March 11, 2009 Toronto, ON — The Canadian Bible Society would like to recognize the accomplishment of the Rev. Dr. Stan Cuthand upon his acceptance of the Lifetime Achievement Award, received on March 6, 2009 in Winnipeg, Manitoba where the Aboriginal community recognized 14 exceptional achievers at the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards.

"As Cuthand, whose proudest achievement is translating the Bible into Plains Cree, accepted his award, he was met with an exuberant standing ovation." This quote, from the Winnipeg Free Press, (March 11, 2009) profiles why the Canadian Bible Society is so proud of its long association with this giant in the Cree community. It would be fair to say that the Rev. Dr. Stan Cuthand is a legend in his time.

After service as a missionary priest in Peru, Rev. Stan Cuthand returned to serve among his own people as a priest, teacher, linguist and Bible translator. His training, experience and natural gifting as a communicator provided the ideal preparation for him to serve as the lead translator on the Plains Cree Bible translation project. His status in the community and the respect that he holds among his people, in the Church and in the academic community were evident during many translation sessions where other Cree speakers would naturally defer to him for solutions to the most difficult translation challenges.

Over a period of more than 2 decades, Stan, supported by funding and consultants from the Canadian Bible Society, completed the translation of the New Testament and about half of the Old Testament in Plains Cree.

The translation on which Rev. Cuthand served as the lead translator is currently being reviewed in Cree communities, and checked for accuracy and transparency against the original languages before publication and wider distribution. Upon completion of remaining quality assurance procedures, the Canadian Bible Society will publish the translation.
