A Letter to the American Bible Society
12 September 2001
Dear Gene,
It was so good to speak with you this morning and to learn that you and your staff were spared from yesterday’s unprovoked attack on your city.
Words cannot adequately express the sense of shock and numbness that we are feeling on this side of the border, nor of our profound grief over the terrible loss of life by this act of terrorism. We join with you, however, in proclaiming the love of God in Christ Jesus as we try to come to grips with the situation. Words from the hymn, “This Is My Father’s World” come to mind:
 |
This is my Father’s world,
O let me ne’er forget
That tho’ the wrong seems oft so strong
God is the Ruler yet. |
And St. John’s Prologue also seems particularly timely:
 |
His life gave light
to everyone.
The light keeps shining in the dark,
And darkness has never put it out. |
Across our country have come reports of CBS Districts providing Scripture materials for those whose aircraft have put down at Canadian airports. No doubt we will find other ways of helping as time goes by. We stand with you and will help in any way possible.
Meanwhile, our prayers and love go out to you, your staff and your countrymen.
Please keep in touch, beloved brother.
Fr. Greg Bailey,
National Director
Canadian Bible Society
